TODAY SAGE WENT TO HIS FIRST PEACE MARCH.

WE THREE (SAGE, HIS MOM MONET & I) DEMONSTRATED PEACE, THE BEST WE KNEW, AS IN "BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO BE IN THE WORLD," AS MANY OTHERS PROTESTED AGAINST THE WAR. I WAS WISHING WE COULD HAVE A PEACE DEMONSTRATION THAT WAS QUIET & PEACEFUL. ARUN GANDHI, MAHATMA G'S 72 YR OLD GRANDSON WAS THERE, BUT WE DIDN'T SEE HIM. WE DID, HOWEVER, SEE SUZANNA STORM,

ROBERT ALLAN (WHO TOOK OUR PORTRAIT AT HOLLYWOOD & VINE), MELENA, CINDY SHEEHAN, RON KOVIC AND SOME OTHER INSPIRING SPEAKERS...THEN WE SAW MY OLD FRIENDS ROBERT ABRAMIAN (AT JOSEPH'S CAFE), JOE AND JOANNA GARCIA AND, AS WE WALKED TOWARD MONET'S CAR, PARKED IN MY OLD NEIGHBORHOOD, UP ARGYLE ABOVE FRANKLIN, I WONDERED ALOUD TO JOE IF CHUCK E. WEISS STILL LIVED THERE...WHEN OUT THROUGH THE GATE WALKED MR. WEISS HIMSELF, WHO SENDS HIS LOVE TO ALL (AND SAID HE MAY BE ABLE TO FIND ME A NEW PAIR OF PUERTO RICAN FENCE CLIMBERS.) HOW ABOUT THAT?

Brotherly Love

By Kevin Tillman

Editor's note: Kevin Tillman joined the Army with his brother Pat in 2002, and they served together in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pat was killed in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004. Kevin, who was discharged in 2005, has written a powerful, must-read document.

It is Pat's birthday on November 6, and elections are the day after. It gets me thinking about a conversation I had with Pat before we joined the military. He spoke about the risks with signing the papers. How once we committed, we were at the mercy of the American leadership and the American people. How we could be thrown in a direction not of our volition. How fighting as a soldier would leave us without a voiceŠ until we got out.
Much has happened since we handed over our voice:
Somehow we were sent to invade a nation because it was a direct threat to the American people, or to the world, or harbored terrorists, or was involved in the September 11 attacks, or received weapons-grade uranium from Niger, or had mobile weapons labs, or WMD, or had a need to be liberated, or we needed to establish a democracy, or stop an insurgency, or stop a civil war we created that can't be called a civil war even though it is. Something like that.
Somehow America has become a country that projects everything that it is not and condemns everything that it is.

Somehow our elected leaders were subverting international law and humanity by setting up secret prisons around the world, secretly kidnapping people, secretly holding them indefinitely, secretly not charging them with anything, secretly torturing them. Somehow that overt policy of torture became the fault of a few "bad apples" in the military.

Somehow back at home, support for the soldiers meant having a five-year-old kindergartener scribble a picture with crayons and send it overseas, or slapping stickers on cars, or lobbying Congress for an extra pad in a helmet. It's interesting that a soldier on his third or fourth tour should care about a drawing from a five-year-old; or a faded sticker on a car as his friends die around him; or an extra pad in a helmet, as if it will protect him when an IED throws his vehicle 50 feet into the air as his body comes apart and his skin melts to the seat.

Somehow the more soldiers that die, the more legitimate the illegal invasion becomes.

Somehow American leadership, whose only credit is lying to its people and illegally invading a nation, has been allowed to steal the courage, virtue and honor of its soldiers on the ground.

Somehow those afraid to fight an illegal invasion decades ago are allowed to send soldiers to die for an illegal invasion they started.

Somehow faking character, virtue and strength is tolerated.

Somehow profiting from tragedy and horror is tolerated.

Somehow the death of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people is tolerated.

Somehow subversion of the Bill of Rights and The Constitution is tolerated.

Somehow suspension of Habeas Corpus is supposed to keep this country safe.

Somehow torture is tolerated.

Somehow lying is tolerated.

Somehow reason is being discarded for faith, dogma, and nonsense.

Somehow American leadership managed to create a more dangerous world.

Somehow a narrative is more important than reality.

Somehow America has become a country that projects everything that it is not and condemns everything that it is.

Somehow the most reasonable, trusted and respected country in the world has become one of the most irrational, belligerent, feared, and distrusted countries in the world.

Somehow being politically informed, diligent, and skeptical has been replaced by apathy through active ignorance.

Somehow the same incompetent, narcissistic, virtueless, vacuous, malicious criminals are still in charge of this country.

Somehow this is tolerated.

Somehow nobody is accountable for this.

In a democracy, the policy of the leaders is the policy of the people. So don't be shocked when our grandkids bury much of this generation as traitors to the nation, to the world and to humanity. Most likely, they will come to know that "somehow" was nurtured by fear, insecurity and indifference, leaving the country vulnerable to unchecked, unchallenged parasites.

Luckily this country is still a democracy. People still have a voice. People still can take action. It can start after Pat's birthday.

once upon a tiny pair of wings

i fell in love at first sight

as people say

they now do wih mine

with an ancient child

now ten times that number aspin

around the sun

this magical one

whose magical ride

has just begun

my healer

my soul baby

my dancer

still seeking the answer

let it be so

it's all in the mind you know

this visiting angel of angels

this rising autumn

this gift from the goddess

this imperfection flawless

my dear winged friend

this love with no end

this poem is your poem

this star which is known

as miss autumn nicole

many happy solar returns

from my soul to yours

one after all

----------

forever your friend

these were taken by jutta biggerstaff at the wild west coyote fest, at around noon saturday. we were listening to savya, mayah & charlyn throat singing and making other primal goddess chanting sounds, which were very soothing, whle sage & i played a game of 'put the rock in daddy's hand'. at one point, sage started singing along woith the women. i did a double take. yep, that was his voice, chanting, "mmmmm." then, after they stopped, he clapped - for the first time that i've seen.

last night, i was sad not to have him or his mom at my bastard sons of john lennon celebration at pappy's. alan bergman & i started the evening with a bunch of oldies: "i don't want to spoil the party," "i feel fine," "hide your love away" (dedicated to fred), "you've really got a hold on me," "nowhere man", "in my life." craig stark did a few solo, then tal hurley. then, shari elf did "imagine", with my plastic army band - and i did my little rap, which i wrote for telekin's song "imagination," all those years ago. then, my band tony mason, sam willmore, with alan on bass - and joined by clive wright unexpectedly on guitar (keep it simple, i always say) . we did my song "i dreamed i saw john lennon" as a medley with "working class hero," "stand by me," "don't let me down," "ballad of john & yoko," "cry baby cry," "come together," "tomorrow never knows" (in a medley with "i've got a feeling" - john's part anyway .."everybody had a hard year." etc.) and "give peace a chance," on which i rambled about the war for a little too long maybe, but it was real and mayah and others sang along.

love is all you need...

sunset & vine

anybody remember wallach's music city? it was hollywood's biggest music store, home of the teenage fair, record-listening booths and brian wilson's favorite place to take a date (you can see a little bit of it on the left). nbc, where steve allen hosted the tonight show, is a fancy bank now. sometimes i miss hollywood, but i miss a hollywood that doesn't exist, except in old pictures...

For Ted
10/1/06

You are so wonderful
A clear spirit that can't see itself yet
But we see you sweetheart
We see you

We see you struggling to see your wonder
And yet wonder just is
You need not worry to be
You are

Your broken wings
Just need mending, that's all
I've told you all along
To just stop flapping for a while

Let them rest, let them heal my angel
That higher skies await you yet
Let the others control the weather
While your fragile bones mend their place

And when the time comes by
That sweeps you off your feet again
You will weather the wind
And reach the heavens of your mind
